Canton Becoming Community of Choice

The City of Canton has emerged as a place of destination, and is fast becoming the community of choice. This didn’t just happen by itself, but came about through a comprehensive plan that not only provides for a variety of housing options, but also for locations for commercial and office development. Together, these ingredients will create a sustainable community for future generations. Along with providing life-cycle housing from entry-level homes to executive estates and a growing economic base, the city has been busy building the infrastructure to meet the needs of our growing community.

An aggressive parks-and-recreation plan was launched with a greenway plan along the river. Heritage Park anchors a 3.5-mile linear-park development plan along the Etowah River. In 2005, the G. Cecil Pruett Community Center and Family YMCA opened. This 46,000-square-foot facility includes an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, gymnasium and wellness center. This fall, Fairways of Canton, Canton’s very own golf course, will open. These amenities added to the park facilities in Canton to provide an assortment of recreation opportunities throughout the city.

The rehabilitation of downtown Canton was jump started when the Downtown Development Authority took on the task of renovating the historic theatre. Through a property exchange, the City received the theatre, and with bonds purchased by the Downtown Development Authority, the 1.2 million dollar renovation was completed. Following the renovation of the theatre, the city received a grant to begin a downtown streetscape program. The brick pavers, streetlights, landscape and fixtures were a beautiful facelift for the downtown, and businesses, new and old, created store fronts that are equally appealing. Not only are the store fronts enticing, but the atmosphere inside the shops, restaurants and offices are sure to make you stay awhile and enjoy the experience.

The Hickory Log Creek Dam and Reservoir has been an ongoing project for over 10 years. The City was well aware of the need for water in seasons of drought, and partnered with Cobb-Marietta Water Authority to provide this resource. The reservoir will cover 411 acres, feature 15 miles of shoreline and hold nearly 6 billion gallons of water. The dam is currently under construction, and the process has been very fascinating to watch. The digging and blasting took the area to its bedrock to create the foundation for the concrete structure that is now being built. Construction of the dam is expected to be completed by fall of 2007.
